Projects
Europeana - the European digital library, museum and archive is a prototype portal offering users direct access to more than 11 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers. It was launched on 20 November 2008 by Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.
Europeana group - comprises of a number of projects which, with funding from the European Commission, will be contributing technology solutions and content to Europeana.eu. CARARE is part of this group.
3D-ICONS - Best Practice Network project starting in 2012 which will provide several hundred 3D models of archaeological sites, buildings and monuments and associated objects to Europeana as well as establishing a production pipeline and guidelines for the preparation of complex 3D content for end users with standard browsers and equipment.
DARIAH - Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities is a project funded under the European Commission's 7th Framework programme to support research across the humanities and arts by developing and maintaining an infrastructure for ICT-based research practices.
3D-Coform - is an integrated project funded under the European Commission's 7th Framework programme which is focussing on tools and expertised for 3D collection formation. The project began in 2008 and runs to 2012.
EPOCH - Network of Excellence in Open Cultural Heritage which brought together institutions to work at the interface between technology and the cultural heritage.
SCULPTEUR - Semantic and content-based multimedia exploitation for European benefit was a three-year European project that started in May 2002 with a focus on 3D content.
ATHENA - Access to Cultural Heritage networks across Europe is a European network within the e-Contentplus programme which aims at bringing together cultural content from Museums and Archives across Europe with a view to make it available in EUROPEANA.
Heritage
European Heritage Network - is a permanent information system focusing on the architectural and on archaeological heritage which brings together governmental services in charge of heritage protection within the Council of Europe.
European Heritage Label - is a scheme to promote the transnational dimension of European cultural assets, monuments, natural and urban enclaves, tangible and intangible heritage, contemporary and traditional heritage and places that have played an essential role in the construction and consolidation of Europe.
UNESCO World Heritage List - includes 911 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which UNESCO's World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value.

INSPIRE Directive overview - this is provided by the UK Association for Geographic Information (AGI). Since metadata for protected sites is to be included in Annex 1 (available 2011), some Public Bodies will be providing data for both CARARE and INSPIRE.
