In/visible Towns
Mon 15 Nov 08:00 - Wed 17 Nov 16:00 ConferenceThe special challenge presented by archaeology in an urban environment has become a motor, an impulse-giver, for development and innovation – in project design, excavation philosophy and technology. Deeply stratified sites in town for example gave rise to new stratigraphic thinking, single context planning and of course the Harris Matrix. Latterly modern digital technologies have been used to great effect for 3D recording and reconstruction of lost townscapes – a development of which we are still only at the beginning. Visual Dimensions from the CARARE project will be presenting a paper "A CIDOC-CRM based metadata scheme for virtual reconstructions". See Abstract. Another CARARE partner, the Heritage Direction, Brussels Capital Region, Belgium will also be presenting their experiences with urban archaeology in Brussels.

In the keynote on 15 October, the Engineering Director for Google Books, James Crawford, will talk about the present and future of the project, which has the goal of scanning the world's books and making the data searchable online. Recent developments include Google’s digitisation agreements signed with Europeana’s host, the National Library of the Netherlands, and with Europeana’s main technology co-ordinator, the National Library of Austria. One result of these agreements is that a further 560,000 digitised historic texts will be made available through Europeana.

TransformingCulture
Wed 14 Apr 09:00 - Fri 16 Apr 17:00 Digital culture, conferenceTransforming Culture in the Digital Age is a three-day conference in Tartu, Estonia. Increasingly, we see new forms of culture being born in the variety of online environments. Users have become producers taking over production of online content and traditional hierarchies of users and producers are collapsing. At the same time, traditional memory institutions like museums, archives, libraries and acknowledged artists struggle to make sense of the transformations that are coming together with new technologies. In this interdisciplinary conference we aim to look at the questions as how such developments influence culture - how is culture transformed in the digital age with a specific focus on the intersection of individuals and institutions. We hope to look at the notion of culture and transformations of the cultural heritage through a variety of disciplines ranging from arts and history to heritage studies and from museum studies to sociology and from media and literature studies to archival studies. The conference calls for variety of people both researchers and practitioners to discuss and analyze how digital culture is produced and consumed both in traditional and new forms.

CAA 2010
The XXXVIII Annual Conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology will be held in the world famous city of Granada, Spain. Granada is said to be a fusion of cultures, and this idea matches completely with the aim of the CAA Conference: the interdisciplinary and complementary work of archaeologists, computer scientists and mathematicians. So, the title of the conference, Fusion of Cultures, refers both to the conference scope and to the spirit of the city that is proud to host it.
